Research
I am currently redesigning the supersonic slit jet source designed by Mike Lindsay to be more robust in a highly charged plasma. The supersonic jet allows one to produce rotationally cold molecules on the order of a few Kelvin in a nearly collision free environment. The jet allows us to view very reactive species which exist in space, but are very unstable in traditional laboratory plasmas. The new source will be of variable height allowing us to probe different areas of the jet without realigning the optics, and hopefully the materials will better withstand the extreme environment of the plasma. I plan on studying C60+ as is outlined in my prospectus The Study of the C60+ Cation in a Supersonic Slit Jet Using Cavity Ring Down Spectroscopy.
