Observatories![]() At UKIRT (Mauna Kea, Hawaii), in collaboration with Tom Geballe, our group first discovered H3+ in the interstellar medium, in dense molecular clouds.

The Oka group is currently observing at IRTF (Mauna Kea, Hawaii), searching for H2 and CO in absorption towards H3+ sources.
![]() <---- At Kitt Peak (near Tucson, Arizona), we have been using the new Phoenix spectrometer to observe H3+ at substantially higher resolution than is available at UKIRT. So far, this work has been performed on the 2.1-meter (third telescope from the left), but the work has been hampered by the lack of an offset guider. This fall, we begin observing on the 4-meter Mayall telescope (upper right). |
